The new system promises high reliability strong recovery systems and ease of collaboration for lakhs of government employees.
Technology experts say this move shows growing trust in Indian software companies to handle sensitive government data and critical digital infrastructure.
Many ministries already started shifting
Several senior ministers have already moved to the new email system. Some ministries including the Ministry of Education have also asked their staff to begin using Zoho productivity tools for daily work. What started as an email migration is becoming a wider adoption of Indian software in routine government operations.
What comes next
The migration of existing accounts will happen in phases. The government aims for a smooth shift and has assured that work will not be disrupted during the transition. Training and awareness for staff will be key to ensure that the new system is used correctly and safely.
If the project moves forward as planned India will have a more secure reliable and self developed digital communication system for official work and this may help reduce dependence on foreign software in the long term.
