In a remarkable achievement for India’s indigenous dog breeds, a desi canine trained by the Border Security Force (BSF) has outperformed 116 foreign breeds to win top honours at the All India Police Duty Meet.
BSF’s dog ‘Riya’ made history by clinching two prestigious titles – ‘Best Tracker Dog’ and ‘Dog of the Meet’ – marking the first time an Indian breed has achieved such distinction.
According to BSF officials, this success is a result of the force’s focused initiative to promote and train indigenous dog breeds under the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has long advocated for the use of Indian breeds in police and security forces.
The BSF, in collaboration with experts at the National Dog Training Centre in Tekanpur, has been leading specialized training and breeding programs to enhance the capabilities and population of native dog breeds. These initiatives have now been extended to regional K9 training centres and field units across the country.
The victory not only showcases the superior skills, intelligence, and adaptability of Indian breeds but also reinforces the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ vision proving that India’s homegrown dogs are no less than their foreign counterparts in serving national security needs.
Officials said that BSF plans to further expand this indigenous breeding program, ensuring that Indian dogs continue to play a greater role in the country’s defence and law enforcement forces.
