The Supreme Court has refused to stay the Telangana government’s decision to increase OBC reservation in local body elections to 42%, pushing the total quota share to an unprecedented 67%.
With 15% for Scheduled Castes and 10% for Scheduled Tribes, the move effectively breaks the long-standing 50% ceiling on reservations set by previous constitutional interpretations. Polling for the local body elections will be held on October 23 and 27 as scheduled.
The decision has sparked debate across political and social circles, with several states now exploring similar expansions. Supporters view it as a step toward greater representation, while critics question whether such measures risk undermining merit and equality before law — a concern that may soon find its way back to the constitutional bench.
