Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday conducted an on-site inspection of the Banbasa Land Port and Sharda Corridor projects in Champawat, calling them transformative initiatives for border development and regional growth.
The ₹500 crore Banbasa Land Port, being developed by the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), is designed to become the state’s first modern trade and transit hub with integrated customs, immigration, and logistics facilities. Officials said the project would strengthen commercial and people-to-people links between India and Nepal, while promoting tourism and small-scale industry in the border belt.
Infrastructure Ready for Takeoff
Dhami reviewed the progress of land transfer and environmental clearances, noting that all key approvals are now in place. “The project has completed all mandatory procedures, including compensatory afforestation and forest clearance for over 80 acres. Construction activities will begin soon,” he said.
The Chief Minister emphasised that once operational, the land port would streamline cross-border movement, reduce congestion, and establish formal channels for agricultural and industrial exports. “Local farmers and entrepreneurs will gain direct access to Nepal’s markets, ensuring better returns and new employment opportunities,” Dhami said.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity and Cooperation
Officials said the project fits into the Union Government’s broader vision of secure and sustainable border infrastructure. The port will house all essential agencies within one complex to ensure smoother coordination and faster trade processing.
Dhami added that the adjoining Sharda Corridor, which will connect the border region with the historic Sharda Peeth route, will further enhance tourism prospects. “The twin projects will showcase Uttarakhand as both a spiritual and commercial gateway between India and Nepal,” he said.
The Chief Minister directed departments and the LPAI to maintain close coordination to ensure that the Banbasa Land Port becomes operational on schedule. He said the initiative would mark a turning point for border trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, reinforcing Uttarakhand’s role as a key link in India’s growing neighbourhood partnerships.
